My mother, who has dementia, moved into Alawarra in early 2018 and has remained a very happy, well cared for and active resident ever since. The first time I visited Alawarra, I was struck by two key factors: no smell of stall cabbage/urine; and the sounds of laughter in conversations between staff, residents and staff and residents. The leadership team was and remains exemplary. Compliance with regulations is assured, just as is the determination for continuous quality improvement. Residents are treated as bona fide residents - as people with individual needs and not impersonally as clients or customers or patients. Living with dementia and with declining cognitive function has not been easy for my mother nor for us, however, Alawarra has always been there to support, suggest or take on our suggestions. My mother has always commended the food and, in early years, was pleased to report daily on the menu - its diversity, quality and quantity. Activities are many and varied and planned out a month in advance. This is a great help to me as I telephone my mother every evening and can help orientate her for the day ahead for those things that she particularly likes doing or attending - like the numerous live entertainments during the week. Even though there is a great physical distance between Alawarra and us, I am able to be in ready contact with Alawarra staff day and night and have always been received warmly and with genuine concern for my mother's wellbeing.

Caring staff in the dementia unit look after their residents very well. The food is plentiful and nutritious. The units are clean and bright. The residents are treated with respect.
