Horrific experience - my father, who is a polio survivor with limited mobility arrived here from hospital at 10am and by 3pm after asking to use the toilet for 5 hours he had been ignored. My brother arrived at 3pm and Dad was still in his hospital gown - he asked numerous nurses to help take Dad to the bathroom and was ignored for another hour. Staff were dismissive and would literally say nothing and walk away in response to questions. The whole place stunk like urine and during the night dad pressed the call button a few times each night for help with toileting and nurses came and said nothing and walked away without helping. My Dad was here for 3 days before we found a vacancy elsewhere and the entire time he wasn’t showered and wasn’t taken to the toilet - only given a change of padding. Every time I saw him he had food spilled all over him and was left in a distressed state. He felt bullied and scared to ask for help after being met with hostility or ignored. Whilst I was here I saw staff yelling at other residents who seemed to lack the faculties to report their abuse. After raising our concerns with nurses every day that Dad was not receiving the ‘high care’ respite he was meant to receive, nothing improved. He was neglected with his most basic needs - toilet, feeding, showering and mobility - he was meant to be put in a wheelchair but never left bed. In addition his 2 metre tall body was cramped into a tiny bed the first 2 nights which aggregated his DVT putting him at risk of fatal blood clots. After pleading with staff for help they least moved him into a longer bed for 1 night. When it was time to leave, they refused to organise an ambulance transfer for the next day and didn’t offer any transport help even though they had their own bus and lifting machines, and instead attempted to delay Dads leaving, most likely to collect more payment for their absolutely negligent ‘care’. The staff here seem less like caring humans and more like desensitised robots who protect each other’s negligent behaviour from being reported. If you want your loved ones to be treated as human beings, do not send them here. They will be neglected and most likely die far earlier than they were meant to. ***UPDATE*** 4 months later, I am still receiving monthly billing from Opal Annandale even though Dad was only there for 2 days and had to literally be lifted out of there by men from his new care facility as staff refused to help him leave. I have replied to the billing email address and tried to call and have not been able to speak with anyone. I am concerned Dad is paying Annandale Grove still as we gave them his financial details for direct debit. I am absolutely appauled.

It is an absolute pleasure to work as a service provider for Opal Annandale. I have been running an intergenerational program for them since mid 2019 and it is truly one of my favourite places to visit. So many wonderful residents with rich life stories to share with students. The lifestyle staff and carers have always gone out of their way to help the Seniors and Teens Empathy Program run as smoothly as possible. I have found the Opal staff to be consistently genuine, helpful and considerate. I always walk in and out of Opal Annandale with a smile on my face. It makes me delighted to know the wonderful Elders I get to know and love so well with just a once a week visit, are in such great hands for the rest of the week!
